Dayton is located in southwest Liberty County where State Highway 146 meets U.S. Highway 90. In the early 1800’s, Dayton was first known as West Liberty, then Daystown, after I.C. Day who settled from Tennessee in the 1830’s. In the 1870’s, when the town became a station on the Texas & New Orleans Railroad, the name was shortened to Dayton. Now one of the three major cities in Liberty County, Dayton is becoming one of the fastest growing areas in the county. The birthplace of Governor Price Daniels is still very much intact at 305 Church Street.
