Amarillo was founded in 1887, and became an incorporated city in 1889. In 1913, the City of Amarillo adopted its current City Charter, which established a commission-manager form of government. The City Commission serves as the policy-making body for the City, and they appoint a professional City Manager to administer City policies and manage all municipal operations. The City of Amarillo is located in the heart of the Texas Panhandle and is home to 174,727 people. It is a regional center for transportation, agriculture, and industry.
